Nilima is a paralegal in the litigation department
Starting a new job is exciting but also daunting for anyone, and most people have similar emotions and experiences when entering a new role in a new place.
My experience as a new starter at Deo Volente Solicitors is most certainly unique and special in comparison to most people who join a new employer.
The legal industry and law firms tend to have a taboo about the sort of working environments they are associated with – Very independent with not much team work, very stern colleagues, very stressful and a great amount of pressure. Coming into Deo Volente Solicitors, I learnt that all of these are merely stereotypes, and law firms like this are actually of a completely different nature.
In my first week, I was welcomed into a home rather than “just a work place” – the first thing I noticed is there is no level of hierarchy and everyone is treated exactly the same; with respect and honour. Everyone is a proud member of the firm and have welcomed me with warm open arms. Each and every individual at DV have great big personalities and are passionate about their work. Instead of frightening me with the work load and what is to come, I was told that the firm is here to make me grow rather than me being here to make the firm grow. With this and the support from my colleagues, I have been able to take on various work in the litigation department and am thoroughly enjoying my time here.
Putting clients first and high quality of work is something that comes naturally to the staff at DV, so I was able to pick this up with ease and comfort. The firm has a strong ethic in doing the right thing and putting 110% into every single thing we do. And along with this, I am constantly praised and appreciated for my hard work.
I have now been at Deo Volente Solicitors for a month and in this month I have not only learnt a lot of legal knowledge and skills, but I have also learnt a lot of life skills. My experience as a paralegal in the last month has taught me to not be afraid, to aim high and that with great work comes a great life. So, to other paralegals going into a new job, I would advise the exact same and to remember that the more you give the more you get.
In the space of just one month, I now feel like a strong asset to the firm alongside the rest of the team. We together are proud members of Deo Volente Solicitors and I feel honoured to be part of a firm which is passionate about both, achieving the best for our clients, and helping the community in every way possible.
